Professor IAO Ujah, mni visited the National Programme Management Unit of the Saving One Million Lives Programme for Results office today and vowed that Benue state must be among the top five states in the next round of disbursements.
Receiving Professor Ujah, the National Programme Manager, Dr. Ibrahim Kana gave an update on the activities of the Programme, including its successes and challenges. Dr. Kana said PforR is the best form of channelling resources to the states while the Federal Government uses levers available to control performance by the states. He decried the performance of Benue state in the last four years as sub optimal.
However, Professor Ujah who is a member of the Benue state Transition Committee under the leadership of the former Senate President, Professor Iorcha Ayu said the new government of Benue state is poised to effecting major changes including personnel that would result to improved health care in the states. He stated that the governor is determined to change the narrative and improve the wellbeing of the good people of Benue state.
The meeting included Dr. Okara Okara Dogara who is North Central coordinator of SOML in Nigeria and Dr. Usman Galadima, Consultant Nephrologist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital opined that the greatest asset of Benue is not just food but Human Capacity and expressed joy on the quality of membership of the Benue state Transition Committee which also includes the former DG of NACA, Professor J.O Idoko.
The meeting ended with a commitment to hold a retreat on health in Markurdi the Benue state capital in a fortnight. The retreat would include all Health Partners in the state, ministries of health, Finance, Economic planning, Local Government as well as the state Accountant General and Auditor General.
Professor Ujah is actually a long time mentor of the National Programme Manager of SOML-PforR, Dr. Ibrahim Kana. Finally, Professor Ujah prayed for his hosts and expressed his appreciation for the work they are doing.
